Stone Cottage Conversion

Somerset

This beautiful Somerset cottage was a finalist for the “Best Alteration to an Existing Home in the 2016 Southwest Building Excellence Awards”. The excellence in the delivery of outstanding Construction and Workmanship was a feature of this category. We are very proud to be the Mains Contractor for this project.

SCOPE OF WORKS

The small stone outbuilding formed part of the adjoining main house. The brief was to create an independent living cottage for a relative. It was close to the family home and used as a log and garden store. The building had never been built for human occupation, so a full scheme of renovation and upgrade of the building was required, including some underpinning, a raft foundation, new roof and redirecting an underground stream.
Through careful design and use of space, the roof space houses two double bedrooms and a bathroom, with new dormers overlooking the garden to the south. The open plan kitchen/diner is bright and welcoming with glazed double doors onto a walled courtyard. This space flows through to the sitting room where the new wood burner helps create a very cosy space. The ground floor shower room is discretely accessed off the stairwell so that mobility and independence can be maintained as long as possible.
